B2B checkout
Validate a buyer's VAT number before you zero-rate an intra-EU sale.
A live answer where a free official check exists, and an honest format check where it does not.
Selling to a business in Europe or the UK means checking its VAT number. This check asks the official service (EU VIES, HMRC, or Norway's register) and returns valid or not valid, with the registered name and address where the member state shares them. For countries with no free live check it validates the number's format and check digit and labels the result as format-only, so nobody mistakes it for a registration check.

Test keys are free and return realistic responses without charging you, so you can build the whole flow before you pay for a single live check.

EU member states through VIES, the United Kingdom through HMRC and Norway. Other supported countries get a format and check-digit validation, labelled as such.
The number has the right shape and a valid check digit. It does not mean the number is registered, and the response says `valid: null` so it cannot be mistaken for a live answer.
VIES depends on each member state's own register, which can be unavailable for hours. You get a 502 register_unavailable and are not charged, never a false invalid.
UK checks need HMRC application credentials, which the platform owner adds in settings. If they are missing you get a clear 503 and are not charged.
US$1.00 per completed live check (EU VIES, UK HMRC, Norway) and US$0.10 for a format-only check. A format-only check is not a live check: it only tells you the number is well formed, never that it is registered. You are not charged when a register cannot answer. Test keys are free.
