Remote access
See and control a computer from your browser or the IdentifyOrg phone app: your own PCs and servers, or a friend's or customer's computer with their permission. The computer needs the free IdentifyOrg Remote app installed and running.
Download the app
| WindowsWindows 10 and 11 | Download88 MB |
| MacmacOS 11 or newer | Download116 MB |
| Linux (any)AppImage, X11 session | Download118 MB |
| Linux (Debian, Ubuntu).deb package, X11 session | Download80 MB |
- Windows: the installer is not signed yet. If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”, choose More info, then Run anyway.
- Mac: open the .dmg and drag the app to Applications. The first time, right-click the app and choose Open. Then allow Screen Recording and Accessibility when asked (the app has buttons that open the right settings page) and reopen it once.
- Linux: for the AppImage, make it runnable first (
chmod +x IdentifyOrg-Remote-0.2.0.AppImage). For the .deb, sudo apt install ./identifyorg-remote_0.2.0_amd64.deb. Log in with an X11 (Xorg) session: on Wayland people can watch but not control, because Wayland does not let programs press keys for someone else.
Two ways to connect
Your own computers
- In your dashboard open Remote Access and choose Get a link code.
- On the computer, open the app, choose Link to my account and type the code (8 characters, one use, valid for 10 minutes).
- The computer now appears in your list. Choose Connect any time while its app is running, with nobody there. You can switch “connect without asking” off for any computer.
Someone else's computer
- They open the app and choose Show me a code: a 9-digit code appears.
- You type it under Connect to someone's computer in your dashboard (or the phone app).
- They see your name and email and click Allow (control, or view only, and optionally files) or Deny. The request expires after 90 seconds.
- The code stops working after the session, and wrong codes are limited to 8 every 15 minutes.
What you can do
| Screen and control | See the other computer and use its mouse and keyboard. Touch works as the mouse on a phone: tap to click, hold for right click, drag to move, two fingers to scroll. |
| Clipboard | Paste your copied text on the other computer, or copy text from it. Text only, and only while you have control. |
| Files | Browse the other computer's user folder, download files, and send files to it (saved in Downloads, IdentifyOrg Remote). The person at the computer has to tick “allow file transfer” when they click Allow. Not available in view-only sessions or on the phone app. |
| Several monitors | A screen picker appears when the other computer has more than one display. |
| Sound | What the computer is playing comes through, with a mute button. Works on Windows and Mac. |
| Record of every session | Who connected, to which computer, for how long and how it ended, for the owner and for the person who connected. |
Safety
- Only a signed-in person with a verified email can connect, and a computer on someone else's account can only be reached with its code and an Allow click.
- While a session runs, a red bar on the computer shows who is connected, with a Stop button anyone at the computer can press at any time.
- The app obeys only the one viewer the session was made for, and releases any held key or mouse button when the session ends.
- File browsing is limited to the user's own folder.
- Removing a computer from your account signs its app out at once.
- Never give your code to someone who called you unexpectedly. IdentifyOrg staff will never ask for it.
Limits to know about
- The app must be running and the computer awake and online. It cannot control the lock screen or the sign-in screen.
- On Windows, programs that run as administrator (and permission prompts) are out of reach unless you choose Control administrator windows in the app once. That option has not been tried on every Windows setup yet.
- Clipboard is text only. The phone app cannot transfer files yet.
