Test mode and live mode: what is the difference?

Test mode

• Uses keys that start with io_test_.
• Returns realistic sample answers so you can build and check your screens and error handling.
• Never uses your balance and never contacts a bank, mobile network or payment company.
• Every reply carries the header X-IdentifyOrg-Mode: test, and JSON replies include "livemode": false.
• In your dashboard, switch the Test / Live button at the top of the page to see only test calls.

Live mode

• Uses keys that start with io_live_.
• Returns real answers, and each call is paid for from your balance.
• New accounts start in test mode. To use live keys, open Developers, API Keys and press Switch to live mode. You need a verified email address first.

A good way to switch

1. Finish building with a test key until every screen and error case works.
2. Top up a small amount of balance.
3. Switch the account to live, create a live key, and swap it in on your server only.
4. Run one real call of the cheapest kind and check it in your API Logs.

Never use a live key in a place where a test key would do. If a screenshot or a code repository ever contains a live key, delete that key and make a new one.
